Global Seminars are SDSU courses taught abroad. Many Global Seminar courses can fulfill GE requirements, major course requirements and international experience requirements. This Summer 2022, the College of Arts & Letters will be offering the Global Seminar courses listed below. History, Culture and Writing in Ireland

This writing intensive course will focus upon the nature of aesthetics and the intersection of political, religious, and social discourse in the development of Ireland. Class discussion will address Irish texts in various genres and media including drama, poetry, art, music, film, and television. Excursions to several historic sites in four different Irish cities will further complement our exploration of the principles of aesthetics, the violent and revolutionary history of political Ireland and its people's identities, and the rhetoric of everyday life.

Florence Summer Program

The Florence Study Abroad Program takes students to the heart of the Renaissance in Florence, Italy. From Dante's house to Brunelleschi's architectural marvels to the sculpted masterpieces of Michelangelo, the sights, sounds, and smells of Florence will become our classroom. Spreading out from Florence, we will also foray into the remote past, exploring Tuscany's beginning under the famed Etruscans. We will survey, first hand, the artistic, architectural, and literary achievements of Italy's first civilizations, its rise to glory under Rome, its intriguing medieval history, and its cultural flowering as the center of the Renaissance.

Culture, Art and Society in Merida

This course integrates advanced conversation and writing in Spanish with a thorough exploration of Mexican culture emphasizing the Yucatán peninsula. Students will gain a rich cross-cultural experience while living a full month in Mérida and exploring the prehispanic, colonial and modern sites of the peninsula.

oaxaca

Mixtec Language & Culture

Mixtec is an indigenous language of Mexico spoken by people living in the states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Puebla, many of whom have migrated and established communities throughout northern Mexico and the United States. This program is designed to provide students with a deeper understanding of the interface between Mixtec culture and the broader mestizo culture of Oaxaca, grassroots movements to preserve Mixtec culture both within Oaxaca and among Mixtec communities in the US, and other such topics that will provide a foundation for understanding Mixtec language and culture.

Juchitán and Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico

 

zapotec

Zapotec Language & Culture

Zapotec is one of the most widely spoken indigenous languages in Mexico, is spoken in Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Veracruz. This intensive program is taught by native Isthmus Zapotec speakers and linguists through the Casa de La Cultura in Juchitán. The course, taught in Spanish, includes five hours of classroom instruction, four to five days per week, over a six week period.
